Union election at MedStar Franklin Square too close to call and marred by MedStar Health union busting
Registered nurses at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. voted on whether to join National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United in an election held on Oct. 14 and 15, 2026. The results were inconclusive at the end of the night, with challenged ballots still to be resolved.

UMC New Orleans nurses to hold press conference on LCMC short-changing patients and nurses

Wichita nurses ratify new contract with strong measures to improve patient safety and nurse retention
Registered nurses at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis and St. Joseph hospitals in Wichita, Kansas, voted overwhelmingly in favor of ratifying a new three-year contract today, winning protections to improve patient safety and nurse retention.

RNs in Tennessee, Arizona, Illinois, and California file petitions for union elections
Registered nurses across the country continue to build our union movement, asserting our collective power against a profit-driven health care system and a corporate-aligned federal government. CNA/NNOC announced today that nurses at four hospitals – which in total employ 4,500 nurses and serve more than 1.7 million patients annually – filed petitions over the past week with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) for union elections.

CNA/NNOC welcomes new Council of Presidents following convention
CNA/NNOC has officially seated a newly elected Council of Presidents to serve a three-year term from 2026-2029. The new leaders took office on Oct. 1, 2026 at the CNA/NNOC convention in San Francisco, California, where nearly 1,500 nurses from around the country convened.

New report finds cost-cutting at MedStar Franklin Square puts patient care in jeopardy
A new report, “The Cost of Cutting Care: How MedStar Is Failing Franklin Square Nurses and Patients”, released by National Nurses United, finds chronic registered nurse (RN) understaffing by MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, Md., puts patient care at risk and leads to numerous poor outcomes as measured by U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Nurses put D.C. hospitals on RED ALERT
Registered nurses will hold a rally and community event on Saturday, Oct. 10 in Washington, D.C. to demand that MedStar Washington Hospital Center reopen its shuttered postpartum unit in the midst of a Black maternal health crisis in the District. Following the rally, the nurses and allies in the community will make their way to the hospital where they will deliver a letter to management calling for the immediate reopening of the unit.

Union nurses reinstated at Prime hospital in Illinois
Four formerly suspended registered nurses at Olympia Fields Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill. have been reinstated and will return to work this week. By Sept. 15, Prime Healthcare had suspended or fired six nurses at Olympia Fields Hospital.

Nurses celebrate massive, historic victory against disgusting Kaiser wage theft
Registered nurses at Kaiser Permanente hospitals across California are celebrating a historic victory against wage theft committed by their employer. California Nurses Association successfully won an arbitration agreement that mandates Kaiser pay stolen wages dating back to at least 2021, potentially totalling a sum in the tens of millions of dollars to be paid out to more than 1,000 nurses.

Nurses celebrate historic victory as Gov. Newsom signs landmark A.I. protection into law
Union nurses with California Nurses Association celebrated a hard-fought victory today as Governor Gavin Newsom signed a CNA-sponsored bill, AB 1979 authored by Assemblymember Mia Bonta (AD-18), into law. The new law establishes landmark protections for patients and health care workers against the unsafe use of artificial intelligence (A.I.) in health care.

When Home is Not Safe
Since the Trump administration began targeting immigrants and Black and brown people for deportation, nurses have long been concerned about how these actions hurt patients — whether it’s federal agents using excessive force on people they are trying to detain or even killing them, showing up at hospitals with detainees needing medical attention and putting the entire facility in a panic, or instilling so much fear in our communities that people just stop seeking medical care because they can’t go outside.

Open House
Education and information is vital to an effective Professional Practice Committee (PPC), an essential committee elected by the nurses and representing each major nursing unit in the facility. The PPC usually meets monthly on paid time and is an essential part of contracts negotiations. The PPC has the authority to document unsafe practices and the power to meet with management and make real changes across the facility.

Crossing the Line
Nurses know elections are crucial. Voting is how we win union representation in our workplaces and elect leaders who represent our interests. If there weren’t power in voting, there wouldn’t be such an effort to take that right away, through gerrymandering, suppressing mail-in ballots, disenfranchising women and Black and brown voters, threatening to send immigration agents to the polls, and otherwise trying to block working-class people from casting a ballot.

HCA Swedish nurses unionize
The second election comes after the National Labor Relations Board ruled that the employer, HCA Healthcare, the country’s largest hospital system, illegally interfered with a previous union election held in 2024. That now-invalidated 2024 election was marred by illegal interference by the employer.
